Browser based games have always been there for those who have fallen on hard times. Times when no games are currently installed on their computer. Mac users especially have suffered.

Lest we forget those who have lost their lives searching for games only to starve before they found something worth playing for more than 5 minutes, it is time to be proactive. It is time to save my fellow Mac users, and all users looking for a browser based gaming experience, from a fate worse than death. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of 30 of the best online games to play, absolutely, completely, 100% freely, and from the comfort of your browser.

Runescape

Developer: Jagex

Ahh Runescape… I remember way back in 2001 when I first played this game. I was blown away. Then again, I was 11 years old and blown away by any game that I could play with other people. Believe me when I say that it has changed A LOT since the days of 2D sprites in Runescape Classic. Runescape is frequently featured on lists such as these since it is the world’s most popular free MMORPG. It has expanded in so many ways since 2001, and as a result, it is filled with years of gameplay.

Desktop TD

Developer: Paul Preece

While Desktop TD has simple graphics, it is insanely fun and cute. The little circular creeps with lil’ dot eyes and the lil’ cannons that squeak when they hit stuff causes a cuteplosion. You almost want to let these little cuties go through. The creeps even cheer when they make it to their destination.

FIFA Online

Developer: EA Sports

Anyone who is totally uneducated about FIFA has obviously been living under a rock. It’s only the most popular EA franchise ever, ever. If you’ve ever played any of the FIFA games on console you’ll know how good they are. While its closed beta 4 has ended, you can register for the next beta phase. Don’t worry about money either, it’s completely free.

Ok, this is bar none, the most awesome game I have ever seen. My mind was blown when I saw that I could play Super Mario Bros with Samus, Link, Mega Man, Simon and Bill R. Admittedly I was less psyched about Simon and Bill R, from Castlevania and Contra, probably because I had no idea who they were. However, all characters are in their 8-bit forms with their powers intact. Samus can shoot her beams, go into a ball, drop mines and jump just like in her games. Link has his boomerang and swords, while Mega man has his slides, arm cannon and awesome jump. Each character powers up and moves the way they normally would in their games, and they are able to kill all enemies by jumping on them just like Mario. And yes, you can play the game as Mario too. One last thing: this game even plays the music of each characters game in the background. It is incredibly faithful to its featured games and as a result, is truly amazing.

A very relaxing puzzle game, with simple yet graphics and soothing music. The aim of the game is to make atoms of the same colour collide to make them disappear. It’s pretty straightforward, and for a puzzle game, it’s not frustrating at all, which is unusual. I think the music has something to do with it though. Regardless, you will be hard put to stop playing this game till you have finished all 50 levels.

Yes, I know I added Freeciv to the list of Freeware Mac Games, BUT, this is a browser based version of the RTS game. What else can I say?

Blood Wars is an MMORPG (mumorpuhguh) where the player controls a vampire in a post nuclear world and tries to get along with all the other vampires (just kidding). Seriously, why do we have to kill everyone all the time? Anyway, there’s lots of things to do and kill.

Continuum

Developer: Seven Lights

Continuum is a strategy game that fuses turn-based war gaming, collectability (whatever that is) with RPG elements. You start off building a squad that you will use to battle other players and find usable equipment on the battlefield. There is a wide variety of races to choose from each with unique abilities so you can choose the one that’s right for you!

Monster Den

Developer: garin

Monster Den is quite an incredible RPG. Sure it doesn’t have much in the graphics department, but the gameplay is awesome. When you start, you pick the different classes of your 4 party members. When this is done, you’re immediately put into a dungeon waiting to be cleared. Along the way you will encounter various enemies and find items to upgrade your party. After clearing each dungeon your party members will increase in levels and you can customise their stats as well as what powers and passive abilities they learn. I highly recommend this game.

Another cool RPG game right here. In King’s Island you control a buff, topless poacher (well, he starts out topless) and go around killing guys while finding and buying armor and items from shops. The combat aspect of this game is great too because it really involves you. There are wide range of stats that you can upgrade to make this game a real fun adventure.

Hands of War

Developer: Danny

Hands of War is an Arr Pee Gee that gives you a choice of 3 different character classes to be. As you level there are various traders and trainers you can talk to that will sell you their wares or allow you to upgrade your spells. For those who like questing, there’s that too, so you can always help out those in need! Or those that just want some dudes dead for whatever reason. Once again, don’t let the graphics fool you, this is a good game!

Wow… just wow. This game is the most original game I’ve seen in a while. It is half side scroller and half sliding block puzzle. It’s hard to put the game into words, but you basically swap between controlling the stick man and operating the puzzle. You must arrange the puzzle constantly in order for you to get through the level as your stickman. Pressing space will zoom in and out of puzzle and side scrolling mode. When operating the puzzle your stick man is stationary and vice versa. Not only does the gameplay kickass, but the music is legendary.

Red Remover

Developer: Gaz

Teehee. This game has sound effects that make me giggle. A cute little puzzle game where all the blocks have cutesy little faces on them (giving you strong motivation to save them). You have to click red boxes to make them disappear while saving all the green ones from falling out of the screen. Easy and straightforward at first, but much more tricky later on.

While it lacks the 3rd dimension of regular Portal, it still has the 2 dimensions to play in. A side scroller that’s a very good flash adaptation of the original game. There are 39 levels to solve, that start easy (just like Portal), and get progressively harder with more of the hazards you know and love. If you were too late to get your free version of Portal on Steam, then this is the free version you must get.

Dragon Boy is an RPG where you control a boy, who has a dragon egg (yeah, it would have been cool if the protagonist was half dragon and half boy). You have to feed your dragon egg and raise it so it can hatch and fight for you. As far as RPG’s go, it’s quite short, and as such, there’s no save function. Kill enemies to get items and upgrade your powers, stock-standard stuff.

Paradise Paintball 3D is a fast paced multiplayer FPS which combines paintball with counter-strike. If there are any CS fans frothing at the mouth out there, then download this game and go nuts.

Eternal Red

Developer: Sean McGee

In Eternal Red, your job is to arm yourself, your ceilings and your floors to kill the enemy. Each enemy you kill nets you a certain amount of gold which you can use to build new weapons, and upgrade existing ones. God help you if they reach the other side of your hallway and destroy your portal. It’s almost like a TD game.

Upgrade Complete is hilarious. It has crappy graphics, until you upgrade it. Your ship sucks as well, until you upgrade it. You pretty much have to earn enough gold to upgrade every aspect of this game and your ship. Everyone has to play this game at least once in their lifetime.

Wanna live like a hobo? Then go out into the streets and live in a box. But if you want to play an RPG involving hobos, then this is the game for you. There’s is so much to do so you’ll never be bored, and you can battle other hobos for money and glory. It’s mostly text based, but very entertaining. For those who want to stay up to date with the new version, Hobo Wars 2 is available to play.

OGame

Developer: Gameforge

OGame is a text-based strategy game in space. Players start out with a planet and gather resources, research technologies, build economic and military infrastructure to create armies. Players can trade, raid and band together to progress if they wish to do so. How you choose to carry out your plans for universe domination* is totally up to you.

*You can’t actually take over the universe.

Another MMORPG over here guys! For those looking for some unique artwork in their MMO, come play AQ Worlds. It has a large game world to explore filled with monsters to kill and equipment, armor and items to find. If anyone is thinking, ‘Aww man, I can’t have any pets??’, fear not, because you can have in-game pets too.

Battle Dawn

Developer: Tacticsoft

The objective in Battle Dawn is to become the strongest leader on earth. Visiting the website you see ‘You must learn to use diplomacy, resources and military to aid in your quest for ultimate power’. Don’t they know that gamers would make the worst world leaders? It is quite addictive so care must be taken.

A great multiplayer game for strategy buffs that will hook you in. You choose one of 5 races, each wanting to take over the galaxy. There are various ways to fulfil your objective in this incredibly deep game. Any beginners thinking that this will have a steep learning curve have nothing to worry about, because it’s easy to get started thanks to a handy help menu.

Sonny 2

Developer: Armor Games

Sonny 2 is an RPG where you play as a zombie that must abuse humans. This game reminds me of Final Fantasy due to the similar combat style and cutscenes. It has a great leveling system and heaps of items and powers.

Auditorium is a very rewarding puzzle game that is very difficult for me to describe in words. The gameplay is simple, you must guide a beam of particles through ‘boxes’ using a variety of tools that are specific to each level. Each set of levels has a particular theme of music. A particular part of the music will play depending on which box is filled with particles. When all boxes are filled, the music in its entirety is heard. Overall an extraordinary and very original game. A must play!

Sherwood Dungeon is a curious game. It is an RPG with one, yes ONE, dungeon. But that’s all it needs since it’s so freaking deep (Noone has yet made it to the bottom). Going further into the dungeon nets you better equipment but the monsters are much harder. You have the option of making a free account, but if you don’t like making accounts (even though it’s totally free) then you can just play without one if you want. However, your character will not be saved this way. So, if you’re looking to play it more than once, it’s in your best interests to make an account.

A fun game based on the popular map Element TD for Warcraft III. It’s a much simpler game than Element TD (those who have played the real deal will know how many tower combos there are) but it’s surprisingly fun and addictive. While the gameplay looks shallow on the surface, it’s much deeper than you think.

Yippee! I luuuurrve bubbles! In Bubble Tanks 2, you start with a small bubble ship, and must kill enemy bubble tanks to get their bubbles to upgrade your tank so you can shoot more and kill bigger bubble tanks to get their bubble to upgrade your tank so you can shoot more and kill bigger…etc. There is a wide variation of upgrade paths to choose from, so you can always try out new types of ships. Great fun!

2029 Online is a mixture of RTS and RPG games. To be successful in 2029 Online you are going to need to strategize, have some rad skills and a healthy stock of teamwork!

Quantum Legacy is a completely free multiplayer RTS game. You can do everything from the single player campaign to online death matches. It’s also got more space battles than you or your grandmother can handle (props if you got the reference).
